Frequently Asked Questions

What comes with my pet’s Walkin’ Wheels small dog?

Your pet’s new Walkin’ Wheels dog wheelchair comes with everything your pet needs to get up and walking again!

What’s In the Small Box?

  • 1 Frame
  • 1 set of (2) Foam Wheels Attached to Struts
  • 1 set of Extenders
  • 2 connectors (7″ and 4″)
  • 1 Front Harness with Sleeves
  • 1 set Leg Rings Rear Support Saddle
  • 1 Belly Belt
  • 2 Stirrups
  • 1 Instruction Manual

Width Connectors:

Your wheelchair will come with two width connectors (7″ and 4″). One is already installed in the back of your cart. If you need more width, the wheelchair comes equipped with a longer connector in the box.

The Front Harness

The cat’s head goes between the blue and black straps. The red strap goes under the cat’s front legs and clips on the side of the harness. The shoulder pads are made of neoprene and keep the straps and buckles from causing discomfort for the cat. Neoprene comfort sleeves wrap around the straps for the cat’s comfort. Comfort sleeves can be cut in half if they are too long.

Length Extenders:

Your wheelchair will come with two extenders (side rails) installed, which determine the length of your cat. The length of the extender should end in the middle of the cat’s front leg. It should not pass the front leg.

Wheels & Struts:

The wheels are attached to a metal piece called a “strut.” Each wheelchairs comes with either 4″ or 8″ foam wheels, which are great for all terrains. They feature a dense foam interior with an outer rubber layer. These wheels will not puncture, wear extremely well, and are easy to clean. Your cat’s wheel size depends on your pet’s measurements.

Belly Belt:

The Belly Belt will help support your cat’s back. It is not always necessary to use the belly belt, but is highly recommended for cats with a long back, overweight or elderly cats, cats with curvature of the spine, and cats with disc problems.

Stirrups:

Stirrups are used to hold the cat’s legs off the ground so they don’t drag due to paralysis, knuckling under, or foot injuries. The adjustable stirrups are positioned to hold the foot up at the hock. If your cat doesn’t need them, the stirrups may be removed from the wheelchair.

The Manual:

The manual gives instructions and tips on assembling and using the Walkin’ Wheels Wheelchair.

Tool Kit:

The tool kit comes in a plastic bag and includes an Allen wrench and set screws. The (optional) set screws may be used to tighten up the wheelchair frame and reduce flexibility, depending on your preference.

How do I measure my dog for a wheelchair?

It’s easy to determine the right size Walkin’ Wheels wheelchair for your pet. All you need is two simple measurements to choose the right size wheelchair for your pet:

  1. Measure the Rear Leg Height to the toe pad, ideally when your pet is laying down. Do not pull the leg tight; leave some natural bend.

Can my dog still use their back legs with the wheelchair?

Yes, the dog wheelchair will gives pets the support they need to stand, walk, and rebuild their strength. The wheelchair supports your dog to relieve pressure and reduce the weight placed on their legs making it easier for them to walk. We encourage your dog to use his/her rear legs to maintain muscle mass and to get exercise, while using their cart your pet will work to develop the muscle in the rear legs and build up their stamina as they exercise. A dog does not need to be fully paralyzed to benefit from using a dog wheelchair. If the rear legs are paralyzed, then the stirrups will keep their legs from dragging.

Can my dog lie down in the wheelchair?

If you have a small pet, it is OK for them to take a rest up against a pillow or bed, because their legs are so short. Otherwise, it is not recommended, due to back or disc issues that could worsen by laying down in the wheelchair.

Is the wheelchair easy to transport?

Yes, the Walkin’ Wheels is very easy to transport. Simply turn the dial on the knuckle wheelchair to fold in the wheels and struts, making it easy to carry and travel with.

How does the Walkin’ Wheels dog wheelchair work?

The Walkin' Wheels rear dog wheelchair is designed to support a pet's hind legs from underneath, providing stability and reducing pressure on their back legs. The wheels of the cart are aligned with the pet's hips, enabling proper support in a natural standing position. This allows the pet to walk naturally while using the wheelchair or lift their legs off the ground using the stirrups if they are paralyzed.

Can my dog use its back legs with the wheelchair?

Using a dog wheelchair can provide your pet with the necessary support to stand, walk, and regain their strength. The wheelchair helps relieve pressure and reduces the weight placed on your pet's legs, thereby making it easier for them to move around. The use of a dog wheelchair encourages your pet to use its rear legs to maintain muscle mass and get exercise. While your pet is using the wheelchair, it will work to develop the muscles in the rear legs and build up its stamina through exercise. It's important to note that a dog doesn't need to be fully paralyzed to benefit from using a dog wheelchair. For dogs with paralyzed rear legs, the stirrups on the wheelchair can be used to prevent the legs from dragging.

Why should I choose an adjustable wheelchair for my dog?

The Walkin’ Wheels wheelchair is an adjustable cart that allows for 2-3" of adjustability in both height and width, and even more in length. This level of adjustment allows you to finetune the fit of your dog’s cart for a customized fit. With an adjustable cart, your dog’s wheelchair can change as your dog’s body changes. Whether your dog gains weight, loses weight, or is still growing, the wheelchair can be adjusted to fit their changing body throughout its lifetime.

Additionally, for pets dealing with progressive mobility loss, the Walkin’ Wheels wheelchair can easily convert to a full support cart by adding a front attachment. Allowing your pet to use the same wheelchair the entire time.

How do I get my dog into their wheelchair?

It’s very easy to get your dog in and out of their Walkin’ Wheels dog wheelchair. First, place the front harness on your pet, making sure the harness is fitted to their body. Next, place your dog on the ground with the wheelchair positioned behind them. Gently lift your dog’s hind legs and place the legs through the leg rings before lifting the sidebars and clipping the harness to the wheelchair frame.

Can my dog sit in a wheelchair?

No. Our chair is designed NEVER to collapse on the dog’s leg or spine. We’ve gone to great lengths to be sure of it. The chairs are designed with the help of veterinarians and rehabilitation specialists to hold the dog up, keeping the spine and legs in the optimal position for safety and healing.

What’s more, the purpose of the chair is to give the dog exercise and the freedom to go outside and do his business. When the dog is tired, you should never leave him in the chair.

The reviews we have seen of the experimental sit-down spring-loaded style have not been positive. Although we have done a great deal of research, we have not found a safe way for a chair to collapse on a dog.

Can my pet pee and poop in the wheelchair?

Yes! In fact, your dog’s wheelchair is designed so that dogs can go to the bathroom and get the exercise they need. Not only can pets pee and poop while using their dog wheelchair, but their wheelchair also actually encourages them to go. A “down” dog tends to be less active, which can impact the internal functions of their body. Once a dog is in their wheelchair, they are standing upright and moving more which encourages their body to function correctly and allow them to relieve themselves naturally.

How does it work?

Both male and female pets can pee and poop freely while using their wheelchair. Their hind end is fully supported from underneath by their rear leg rings keeping them in a comfortable and natural standing position. Although your pet can not squat while in their wheelchair, they will relieve themselves while standing.
Watch how easily dogs can use the wheelchair to go to the bathroom, and how easy it is for female dogs too.
